- CNN INTERNATIONAL:
- “TURKEY'S FIRST LADY OF FINANCE”
- “THROUGHOUT TURKEY, SABANCI HOLDING IS A BYWORD FOR SUCCESS”

Sabanci Holding Chairperson Guler Sabanci was a guest of the Marketplace Middle East on CNN International. In the video aired under the headline “Woman at the Helm” in Face Time, Guler Sabanci stated: “Sabanci University was one of the most satisfying projects I have ever worked on.” Conducted by Jennifer Ecclestone, the interview was shot at the Sabanci Centre, Sabanci Museum, and Sabanci University.

Narrator of the program, John Defterios, introduced Guler Sabanci as follows: “She now controls one of the biggest multi-billion dollar conglomerates in Turkey, the Sabanci Group companies operating in diverse sectors. And in the eyes of many, she is one of the most powerful women in the world.” Guler Sabanci was described as the “Turkey's First Lady of Finance” in the program.

-Sabanci University: Satisfying, and in true Sabanci style, successful...

While mention was made of the emphasis placed by the Sabanci Group on the social responsibility activities, it was said in the program: “Since the early 70s, the holding company has poured over one billion dollars into its charitable foundation. The funds help, in part, with new acquisitions for the Sabanci Museum on the banks of the Bosporus. Besides, a large tranche of charitable dollars has been infused into the campus of Sabanci University, equipped with state-of-the-art technology, which she, too, helped found. ‘It was one of the most satisfying projects I have ever worked on,’ she says for the University.”

The program had also the statement of Sabanci: “I feel what makes me more successful is not only the business interests I have, but my interests and my love of life. And that can only be fulfilled properly if I feel myself that I am sharing, giving and learning and receiving. So it is a whole thing that makes a person, completes the circle.”

The program imparted to the audience about the University the following: “Satisfying, and in true Sabanci style, successful. It’s regarded as one of the best Universities in Turkey, and sends students to some of the world's top business schools offering graduate programs. It’s also one of the most generous Universities. Nearly 40 percent of students are on full scholarships.”

The interview also contained the views of Cenk Alperdem, a Sabanci-University student who is off to MIT this year, and who said at the interview: “She encourages students to be different, and I think this is how I will remember her for the rest of my life. I want to work for Sabanci someday or, perhaps, start my own company.”

-“Guler Sabanci is already an icon as a woman heading a multi-billion-dollar conglomerate...”

In the article Sabanci was described as follows: “Throughout Turkey, Sabanci Holding is a byword for success. And its boss, Guler Sabanci, is the embodiment of the professional dynamism that has helped make Turkey one of the most feted new markets in the world. At just 53 years old, Sabanci is already an icon being the first woman to head a multi-billion dollar conglomerate, the first woman to sit on the board of Turkey's influential Businessman's Association TUSIAD.”

In the program the following information was provided about the rise of Guler Sabanci to her current career position: “Her grandfather Haci Omer, a rags-to-riches cotton sharecropper, built the Sabanci conglomerate in the 1940s. The business was passed down to his son Sakip Sabanci in the 1960s. Before his death in 2004, Sakip handed the reins of this venerable empire to Guler, his single niece, who was head of the company's tire division - overlooking his brothers and their numerous male offspring. In Turkey's patriarchal commerce sector, the decision was nothing short of earth-shattering.”

“I started working there and it was a man's world. It was a... I should not say it was difficult, but it was different and I adapted and they adapted to me,” Guler Sabanci said at the interview, in response to a question about her being a woman in the world of business.

The program contained the following statements on the success story of Guler Sabanci: “Under her watch, the company's earnings have soared and topped $12 billion. Such a pedigree earned her a place in Fortune Magazine's 50 most powerful Women in Business.”

Sabanci’s personal properties were described as “Arguably the most famous woman in Turkey, her name is a must-have on any notable guests list. In fact, she says her calendar is booked a year in advance. Despite her popularity, she prefers to spend her limited free time fostering what she calls a climate of creativity.”
